Biography

Dr. Cetin is an Assistant Professor at Michigan State University in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He has over 12 years of experience in academia in the field of geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering. He received his Ph.D. from University of Maryland-College Park (2012). He is the head of the Sustainable Geotechnical Infrastructure Group (SGIG). His research program ... encompasses multiple research fields including transportation infrastructure, nuclear waste disposal, municipal solid waste landfill design, remediation of mine waste/contaminated soils, and sustainable geotechnical practices.

His research activities are mainly focused on the following fields: (1) Improvement of the sustainability of geotechnical structures; (2) environmental suitability of geotechnical structures built with waste materials and industrial byproducts; (3) remediation of contaminated soils with industrial byproducts; (4) characterization of shale media for nuclear waste disposal; (5) improvement of the quality of the mechanistic-empirical pavement design approach, (6) prediction of frost heave-thaw weakening and frost/thaw depths of soils; (7) heated pavement systems; and (8) engineering education.

His research has been sponsored through competitive grant awards from a diverse range of national and state agencies. He has served as principal investigator (PI) or Co-PI for externally funded research from agencies including the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE)-Department of Interior (DOI), U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), USDOT, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), National Science Foundation (NSF), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), National Road Research Alliance (NRRA), and multiple different state DOTs.
